Welcome to WritersReadersDirect. You are free to browse through the categories to find the kind of books you like to read. Novels are categorised under the heading of Literary or a number of different genres. Short stories come in collections and as singles. Micro fiction is generally less than 1,500 words long. Flash is 350 or less. Both micro and flash fiction titles are downloadable in bundles of five, ideal to read on a handheld device on commuter journeys. Non-fiction covers memoir, autobiography, biography, history, natural history and self-help.
Each title carries a brief description to guide you in your choice. You can also read an extract before you decide. If you see the WRD's eye view symbol beside the title, it means that we think this is a particularly good read.
DRM Please note: all ebooks on WRD are DRM free, allowing them to be downloaded and read on any device.
Accounts, payments and downloading
Add your chosen title(s) to your shopping basket. At the check-out you can set up your user’s account.
Please note: your Log In for your account in future will be your email address.
You can make payments with a credit/debit card via PayPal which provides an easy and secure system for online payments. Go to www.PayPal.co.uk to set up a PayPal account if you live in UK; or www.PayPal.com if you live elsewhere. Currency conversion is processed automatically.
Non-fiction, novels and short story collections carry a flat fee of £3 per download, whatever the length. The fee is for the transaction and the use of the service rather than the title downloaded. Single short stories and micro and flash fiction bundles of five are priced at £1 per download.
After your payment is processed, you can go to Downloads (see top left of the screen). You have a choice of formats, PDF or ePUB depending on how you want to read your eBook - on computer screen, handheld device, or as a computer print out. You can print a PDF file. ePUB is said to be the most widely used software for digital reading. Both PDF and ePUB are suitable for a large number of reading devices.
On download, the file will be sent to your computer where it will appear labled 'resource' with some numbers/letters. You can rename it with the title of the eBook you have purchased. You will need Adobe Reader, PDF Suite, Calibre or similar software to open the file. See Links. If necessary, seek advice from your local IT helper; there are too many different permutations of hardware and software for us to give specific guidance here.
The following reader devices support both PDF and ePUB files:
Amazon Kindle 2 DX, Apple iPad, Barnes and Noble nook, Bookeen Cybook, Cool-er Classic, Hanlin eReader V3, Hanvon WISEreader, iRex iLiad, Inver Story, Nokia N900, NUUTbook 2, OLPCXO, Sugar, Onyx Boox 60, Pocketbook 301 Plus 302, 360, Sony Reader, Viewsonic VEB612
Registered users of the site
Please make your views known by rating the fiction you download and read. In this way you will help maintain the standards of writing, style and content. You can also discover and foster new talent.
Go to My Account > View Order History > My Orders. You will see you can rate the title with stars and write a review.
Award stars and write reviews
The facility for awarding stars and writing reviews is accessed from your account and order history. Use the star system with discrimination. Do not award any stars at all if you think the content is not up to standard. When you write a review, take into account the writer’s ability in these areas: narrative drive, characterisation, dialogue. Put yourself in the writer’s place and only upload your review if what you write is what you would say to the writer if he or she were in the same room.
Maintain standards
We depend on our readers to help maintain standards on WritersReadersDirect. We aim to vet everything submitted. We appreciate your help, too, so contact us to draw our attention to any material which might be seen as objectionable. This includes reviews from other readers and anything posted on the Forum. If we agree with your opinion, we will delete it from the site.
Adult fiction which includes sexually explicit and/or violent passages is permitted when it serves the literary purpose of the work. We do not want to host any content which is gratuitously pornographic, violent, racist, politically inflammatory, plagiaristic, or that infringes any copyright. See our Terms & Conditions.
Age ratings
To guide readers in their choice of appropriate fiction, every title carries an initial indicating its age rating.
U suitable for children
PG parents must vet their child’s choice
YA may contain strong language, some violence and mild sexual content
A suitable only for adults
Recommend titles to us
If ten or more readers recommend a particular title to us, we will give it the WRD's eye view symbol if we agree it warrants it. Go to The WRD's eye view.
